CALL TO ACTION - On Jan 2nd, 2018 - Demand City Council Meet with CELDF
In the upcoming Lafayette council meeting on Jan. 2, Lafayette city administrator, Gary Klaphake, will apparently recommend to council that the City not consult with the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF) in defense of the Lafayette Climate Bill of Rights and Protections (CBoR), which would ban fracking in Lafayette. (That information is in the council’s agenda packet for Jan. 2, posted here on the city’s website http://www.cityoflafayette.com/Archive.aspx. The discussion will take place under city administrator comments in the agenda.) Mr. Klaphake’s expected recommendation will be based on the opinion of the city’s newly hired land use attorney from Durango, Jeffery Robbins, and CIRSA, the city’s insurer. There was no communication with CELDF, the internationally known experts in community rights organizing. There was no communication with the citizens who wrote and promoted this law, which is based on our community’s fundamental right to clean air, clean water and a healthy climate. This move signals the council will accept drilling permits under the new regulations Attorney Robbins is currently writing and that it does not intend defend the CBoR.
Mr. Klaphake no longer lives in Lafayette; he now lives in Broomfield. City attorney David Williamson lives in Boulder. Mr. Robbins lives in Durango. The council is the only official entity at the meeting part of and speaking for those who will be directly affected.
We need as many people as possible to show up at the Jan. 2 meeting and demand that CELDF and the community rights argument get a seat at the table. Please come to the meeting and make the following demand or simply come and stand in support of those who speak:
1. A public meeting with council and representatives of the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund 2. That this meeting be held in a venue large enough to include all people wanting to participate. 3. Spanish translation. 4. Live video streaming and recording.
