Charges dismissed against State of the State protestors: Now is the time to escalate

Charges dismissed against State of the State protestors: Now is the time to escalate BOULDER COUNTY, CO - East Boulder County United (EBCU) is pleased to see that Denver District Attorney Beth McCann is dismissing all charges against Sunrise Movement and Extinction Rebellion protestors at Governor Polis’s State of the State address earlier this month. EBCU applauds and encourages actions that expose the unjust, hypocritical environmental policies of Governor Polis and the ruling Colorado Democratic Party. This party, the one that showcases its so-called environmentalist credentials, is in fact responsible for the current drilling extravaganza on the Front Range and has been for more than a decade beginning with its 2010 Clean Air Clean Jobs Act. Meanwhile, in the face of catastrophic global climate change and ecosystem collapse, Democratic electeds offer nothing but weak, unenforceable regulations and more electric charging stations. Republicans support the industry outright; Democrat leadership is more dangerous because it manipulates public opinion behind a false cloak of environmental concern. These kinds of shut-it-down actions are long overdue. EBCU pledged funds for the protestors’ legal defense. We will hold onto those funds for the next round when protestors will likely face charges. Ms. McCann threatened as much: she warned activists that …”if they engage in future actions that disrupt state business, criminal charges will be considered.” (She also encouraged activists to work with their elected officials to “effect the change they seek”—as if that statement has one ounce of credence give electeds’ records over the last decade. And, of course, drilling continues at Bella Romero.) That's why now is the time to escalate protests, not back down. Sustained oppression must be met with sustained protest. Ghandi did not get the British Empire to quit India overnight. It took a calculated and sustained campaign until it was intolerable for Britain to stay. Therefore, while we certainly applaud protestors' direct action at the state capital, it must be the beginning of a series of similar protests. We have no choice but to become ungovernable when government loses consent of the governed by consistently siding with and openly working for the interests of the destructive oil and gas industry in this final race to extinction. EBCU Narrative For almost 10 years, EBCU has spoken clearly on the issue of fracking:
Fracking is a violation of the land, the health of our families, and the well-being of our communities and climate.
Attempts to forcefully move fracking into unwilling communities is a violation of our fundamental rights.
The laws that seek to remove us from protecting the land, the local environment, the climate, and our right to self-govern are in every way immoral and illegitimate.
We have the right and obligation to protect the environment, our families, and our communities.
All government officials and staff are asked to side with the people in every capacity, refuse to administer the destruction of the land and its climate, and enforce the will of the community to protect ourselves from any intrusive industry that fails to recognize these fundamental rights.
In the event that elected leadership fails to join with the people and the environment, we will protect our communities ourselves.
